On "I Can't Draw ____"

zorgia:

I guess everyone that draws, paints or related has heard these two, but I don’t care, I just wanna rant.

Because of some wrong reason that the world revolves about everything being done in morning hours instead past noon when everyone’s brain is actually plugged in, I had to go and renew my passport. While waiting (outside, in the cold, semi-voluntarily), I brought my sketchbook to knock out a couple of thumbnails of future comic pages. While I like to do that when I’m massively wasting my time with things I really don’t want to do, I sorta hate to do it in public. It’s not shyness, but having people approaching me about it makes me kinda uncomfortable. I like it when it’s respectful, not even praising what I do, but actually curious. Or when they approach with their kids and show them how a grown man makes a living (or something like that) drawing to encourage them to make the same mistake.

Anyway, to the point. Today, the person sitting right next to me, looked over and started a short conversation. Mind you, it was 7 in the morning. For the people that know me, me being up at 7am is like the catholic church being okay with the use of condoms. It’s against nature and it rarely happens. So my level of tolerance is being pushed.

Anyway (again), this person finished one of his sentences with “I can’t even draw stick figures”. Not only that, that commentary sparked the promptly commentary of the person sitting right next to me on the other side (who was also looking at what I was doing and hearing the other person, but exercised restrain a bit better and did not address me in conversation (yet)) to say “And I can’t even draw a straight line”.

How the story ended is irrelevant because I was nice to those people and that’s no fun, but I’d like to address the individuals that might be reading this that are not art people.

Never, ever, ever, ever use those two sentences to imply that you can’t draw.

-“I can’t draw stick figures”. Yes you can. If you actually can’t is because you have no hands.

-“I can’t draw a straight line”. Well, neither can I! I need a ruler for that and there’s always the chance it won’t be straight anyway.

Further than that, that’s not all we do! It’s like telling a teacher “I can’t even tolerate children” or a doctor “I can’t even fondle a prostate”.

Mix it up. Tell us what was (or still is) your favorite cartoon on TV. Or your favorite comic book (or comic book character). Let us know what you used to like to draw as a kid. Or even if you have kids, if they have a drive for drawing. Tell us other stuff, but please, please, avoid using both those stupid remarks.

Thank you.
